CC50 Nominated for "Event of the Year" Port Hawkesbury, NS Organizers and volunteers of last summer's signature tourism event, the 50th Anniversary of the Canso Causeway, are celebrating once more. Today, January 11, 2006, the week long event was recognized by the East Coast Music Association with an ECMA Event of the Year nomination! On August 13, 2005 nearly 17,000 people gathered along the shores of the Canso Causeway to witness an amazing musical spectacle which graced television screens, radio stations, websites and newspapers across the country. In addition to the historic 400-piper march, the week-long event featured lunchtime concerts, evening ceilidhs, a songwriters showcase, a piping concert, evening pubs on the waterfront, family concerts at Granville Green and a Golden Gala Concert featuring some of the region's best performers and an ensemble of promising local East Coast talent. Five months later, the week-long event is being recognized by the region's music industry. "Without a doubt, the sights and sounds of the 50th Anniversary of the Canso Causeway will be etched in the minds and memories of thousands of spectators for years to come," says Bob MacEachern, Chair of the Canso Causeway 50th Anniversary Society. "The cornerstone of the event and one of the key elements to its success was having a solid entertainment component, featuring many of the region's finest performers," says MacEachern. "The event featured 20 performances by hundreds of Atlantic Canadian artists." The anniversary event was programmed to incorporate established East Coast artists in addition to local entertainers and performance opportunities for the region's younger artists. MacEachern also noted that the anniversary was a once-in-a-lifetime event which was fifty years in the making and will never be re-created in the same manner. "Being named EMCA Event of the Year would be a great last encore for the 50th Anniversary of the Canso Causeway," he added. The ECMA's are being held in Charlottetown February 23- 27th, 2006.
